Description: Reading systems are a dime-a-dozen nowadays. Many of these offer text-to-speech (TTS) and provide some study skills tools like a dictionary and a MP3 creator. Kurzweil 3000, Text Help’s Read&Write, and ClaroRead set themselves apart for their high quality voices, writing support, and optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities. In this training, we will compare and contrast the many features of “the Big Three” while pursuing the workflows that alternate media specialists and students will take when performing typical tasks with these reading systems. At the end of this training, participants will understand and be able to perform these tasks:
  • Using the native optical character recognition (OCR) tools in Kurzweil, Read and Write, and ClaroRead
  • Adjusting the text-to-speech (TTS) voices and settings in all three programs
  • Compare the experiences of reading in KESI (Kurzweil), DOC, and PDF formats when using each of these reading systems
  • Following a workflow for MP3 creation with each program
  • Accessing writing tools (e.g., word prediction that each program provides)
  • Distinguishing strengths and weaknesses between the three programs
  • Identifying various methods for users to improve study skills with Kurzweil, Read&Write, and ClaroRead
Reimbursement Level: Please be advised that reimbursement is only available for travel expenses for California community college Disabled Student Services Faculty and Staff. Hotel expenses will not be reimbursed.
